Writing Club
Mountain Ridge Writing Club Collects Books

With the air getting colder and Christmas around the corner, Mountain Ridge High School’s Writing Club banded together to promote a school-wide drive to collect books of all genres to Toys for Tots and the Family Crisis Resource Center. From December 2-8, MRHS's Writing Club, in collaboration with Jennifer Brown, Director of the FSU Center for Literary Arts, held a book drive where students donated books, both gently used and new. By the end of the drive, students collected enough books to fill over twenty-two boxes. "I was surprised and overjoyed to see such an amazing amount of books donated by our students who are willing to share their love of reading and, hopefully, can instill that same passion in others," stated Dr. Marchbank.

Poetry Out Loud: National Recitation Contest Winners
The Poetry Out Loud: National Recitation Contest was created by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation and is administered in partnership with the State Arts Agencies of all 50 states, the District of Columbia, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico. Poetry Out Loud encourages students to learn about great poetry through memorization and recitation.  The program helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about literary history and contemporary life.

On Tuesday, December 13, Mountain Ridge High School held its competitive school-wide contest of the Poetry Out Loud Recitation Contest with a total of 8 finalists:  Morgan Edwards, Jordyn Green, Cheyenne Hart, Audrey Jones, Claire Sullivan, Chloe Wildman, Hannah Winters, and Ian Zheng.  Coordinated by Dr. Stephanie Marchbank and judged by Mrs. Frances Ann Shaw, Mrs. Jacqueline Davis, and Mr. Fred Powell, the contest resulted with the following top three reciters: (1) Audrey Jones, (2) Chloe Wildman, and (3) Jordyn Green.

Audrey Jones will continue on to represent Mountain Ridge High School at the Region 1 Poetry Out Loud Contest on Saturday, February 25 at the Delaplaine Arts Center in Frederick, Maryland. Congratulations to all students for a fantastic job!
